SUPPLEMENTAL MEDICAL SCREENING OF PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN STANN CREEK WEST

This program is extremely popular with the parents, students and teachers. The primary and secondary school children in Stann Creek West are not receiving adequate medical care and public health education. One of the goals of the H.A.N.D.S. Foundation is to “Establish regular medical, dental and vision checkups” for the constituency of Stann Creek West.

The health care workers in the rural communities are unable to provide all of the medical screening and treatment required for the 7,000 students attending the 21 primary schools and 2 high schools in Stann Creek West. Each student is given a general physical to include, but not limited to immunizations, height, weight, glucose testing (optional), vision, dental, personal hygiene, and blood pressure. Most medical conditions can be handled at the time of screening and those requiring additional treatment are triaged appropriately. There are also oral presentations on personal hygiene and any other topic that is an identified need at each school.

The program managers are Judy Cuellar-Krieg, R.N. and Richard Krieg, Ph.D. from Hopkins Village. Nurse Judy is licensed in Belize and the state of California. She was an experienced critical care nurse at a prestigious medical center in southern California and was repeatedly acknowledged for her beside care and teaching skills. Dr. Krieg has his Ph.D. in microbiology and was the Director of the Belize ­ U.S. Epidemiologic Research Center in Belize City. He has had extensive experience in epidemiology and public health in the rural villages of Belize.
